Contra Evolution - A Classic Run-and-Gun Shooter With 21st Century Graphics and Controls
Contra: Evolution is a classic run-and-gun shooter with 21st century graphics and controls that brings all the run-and-gun action of the 1988 original to iOS. Defeat the alien invaders in this mobile-friendly version of the Contra series from Punchbox Studios and Take Me Games!
Several other Konami-produced games have been based on the Contra series, including Best Student Council (Konami anime TV series), Power Pro Kun Pocket 8 (Nintendo DS), Robot Chicken, and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Despite the similarities between Contra and these titles, most of these series deviate from the traditional side-scrolling gameplay that is so synonymous with the franchise.
One of the main differences between Contra and these other games is that in most of these, your character has a limited number of lives to start with (three in most console games), and once you die, your weapon configuration will reset back to the default. This means that you must be careful about your jumping, dodging and special skills in order to survive until you reach the next level.
Another deviation is in the NES versions of Super Contra and Probotector, where the two robotic soldiers RD-008 and RC-011 replace Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as protagonists. Originally, this was a move to avoid any association with the Iran-Contra affair that was occurring at the time of the game's release in Europe and Australia.
During the development of the NES version of Super Contra, Appaloosa Interactive made an attempt to convert the run-and-gun gameplay into fully polygonal 3D graphics. The resulting game, Legacy of War, has several side-scrolling stages and an overhead stage. The NES release of the game also introduced the homing gun, a power-up that would not be seen again in any of the other console games until Operation C.
